Sustainability - What is it?

Updated: Jun 24

Sustainability is a ‘hot topic’ globally. We hear the word in conversations across all industries…

How can we be sustainable?

How can we work towards sustainability?

Are we environmentally friendly?

What is our Carbon Footprint?

So, we thought we would start by addressing…

What exactly is Sustainability?

“Sustainability is the practice of using natural resources responsibly today, so they are available for future generations tomorrow.” – National Geographic

In other words, it’s about taking care of our environment in order to preserve it. It’s about being mindful of the resources we use and the rate at which we use them, in order to avoid depleting them quicker than they can regenerate. It’s about being considerate about the impact our actions and technologies have on the environment. It’s really all about sustaining and preserving the beautiful world in which we live.

What does sustainability look like?

Well, sustainability can look like a number of things…

It could be using renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines or solar panels to power our technologies.

It could be using biodegradable materials for single use products, to ensure they don’t harm the environment and its biodiversity.

It could be recycling materials or products and re-purposing them into new materials to avoid waste.

There are countless examples that can define how sustainability may appear, each one having some small positive impact on our environment.

Obviously, not all processes, materials and systems are sustainable or completely sustainable, however, as a community, country, and globe there is a general push towards improving our approach to ensure that we are working towards greater sustainability.

So, at the end of the day…

Why is sustainability important?

This is a great question! We are all discussing it, we all hear the conversations being had and chances are we have all felt compelled to be aware of sustainability in our day-to-day actions.

Sustainability is important because it ensures that we meet the needs of our day-to-day lives without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It helps to preserve natural resources and biodiversity, reduce waste and pollution, and create a more equitable and just society.
